Yoon Sang Hyun debuted with ‘Queen of Housewives’ in 2006 and gained an immense amount of popularity through ‘Secret Garden’ in 2010. This time, he shed his image of a clean, young gentleman and returned as a ‘good-looking beggar.’ He did this through the movie ‘Vocal Clinic’.
‘Voice Clinic’ is a comedy film that portrays a story about ‘Shin Hong’, a star teacher of ‘Dr. Mok’s Voice Clinic’ who has a 100% recovery rate, and ‘Dong Ju’, a woman who is completely tone deaf.
In ‘Voice Clinic’, Yoon Sang Hyun’s character, ‘Shin Hong’, is the star teacher of Dr. Mok’s voice clinic and a flawless 100% recovery rate for those who enter the clinic under his instruction. Although he is a man of great skill, his physical feature overflows with a poor and sloppy appearance and even smells bad.
Taking lessons for month under the instruction of ‘Shin Hong’ makes the students good enough to audition for ‘Superstar K’, while three months equals having enough skill to appear on ‘I Am A Singer’. ‘Dong Ju’ (Park Ha Sun) is a woman who is absolutely tone deaf and appears in front of ‘Shin Hong’, the teacher who has extraordinary skills, shaking up his life as a teacher.
In the movie, Yoon Sang Hyun is ‘Shin Hong’ a rough, but comical star teacher who has singing skills that shake women’s hearts and lead a natural and not superfluous lifestyle.
Seven years after his debut, Yoon Sang Hyun stepped foot into the movie industry for the first time. However, he stated, “I didn’t choose not to enter the movie industry on purpose.”
“As I had the roles of fun characters in my previous dramas, I always thought I wanted to try acting as a psychopath or strong character in a thriller. However, there was a gap between my existing image and those types of characters, so I contemplated on whether or not I would be able to absorb the audience into the character. As I was contemplating on this fact, I received the scenario for ‘Voice Clinic’ and decided that ‘Shin Hong’ is the character I would be able to act out the best.”
‘Shin Hong’ has a nervous temperament, but is clumsy at the same time. He may seem similar to Yoon Sang Hyun’s previous characters, ‘Oska’ and ‘Heo Tae Joon’, but the crucial difference between ‘Shin Hong’ and the other characters is that ’Shin Hong’ is ‘dirty’.
‘Shin Hong’ is so absorbed in music that he has no interest in dressing himself up. He is completely different from the Yoon Sang Hyun’s most representative image, ‘an immature son of a wealthy family’. He explained, “If the point of my past characters were cool images that burst of wackiness once in a while, ‘Shin Hong’ is someone who carries on the comical character.”
“’Shin Hong’ is sloppy, looks poor, and smells... I tried to make this character different from the others while acting by trying to be dirtier (laughter).”
In order to passionately act as Shin Hong, who has ‘a twist in charms’ as a perfect star teacher and a man who looks untidy on the outside, Yoon Sang Hyun had to film while wearing a smelly and sloppy outfit. In reality, Yoon Sang Hyun had a lot of complaints about this character. The story of which he proposed making his character a star teacher who wears a clean suit was rejected is famous.
“I wanted to be a refined star teacher. I even have the appearance of a fashionista that I’ve shown until now... I tried persuading the director of this, but he convinced me to wear slippers and a sloppy, cotton t-shirt. When I look back at the character named ‘Shin Hong’, I think he is a character who had to give up looking good to get along. I think that it would have been awkward if ‘Shin Hong’ was a clean star teacher within the same story.”
People often assess Yoon Sang Hyun’s innocent and cheerful charms, which are loved by the public, as not ‘merriment’, but as ‘frivolous’. However, Yoon Sang Hyun expressed that he does not care about this.
“I don’t feel a lack of sincerity or anything. This is because the fun and cheerful image that I show the public is my honest image. I think it would be harder for me to create and maintain a serious image (laughter).”
Yoon Sang Hyun’s trademark bright energy is ‘nature,’ like he said, and rather philosophical.
“I’m always open and treat the people around me with my regular self. I realized that if I treat people sincerely without any pretense, they do the same to me. Also, I always act positively and brightly. If I approach people in that way, they become bright and happy as well.
There is a difference between acting for the small screen and movies even if the plots and roles are similar. The plot of a drama is split into about three months of filming for 20 episodes, which airs twice a week. However, in order to complete a two-hour story for a movie, filming commences for as long as six months. Yoon Sang Hyun has acted mostly and dramas and shared the atmosphere in which a movie is created, “I think filming for a drama was easier than filming for a movie.”
“I’m most comfortable with dramas. The scenes are short. It’s a relief that ‘Voice Clinic’ was filmed shortly, scene-by-scene. If it was a movie in which I had to express a lot of emotion, I would have had a lot of trouble.”
The drama in which Yoon Sang Hyun first made his name known was the MBC drama ‘Queen of Housewives’ with his mega-hit role as ‘Tae Bong Ee’ Heo Tae Joon. However, he showed a hint of his potential of success before ‘Queen of Housewives’. There are still many people who remember Yoon Sang Hyun’s sorrowful image from MBC drama ‘Winter Bird’.
Currently, Yoon Sang Hyun is displaying a strong comedic image, making his fans have a longing for his other images. On this, Yoon Sang Hyun said, “I do want to change my character, but I put more importance on the scenario rather than the character” and “If I really like the project, I would be willing to portray another character like Joo Kyung Woo in ‘Winter Bird’ or I could sing again like in ‘Secret Garden’ or ‘Voice Clinic’.
It is hard to separate Yoon Sang Hyun from the word ‘song’. Yoon Sang Hyun, who even prepared to debut as a singer in the past, said, during the production conference of ‘Voice Clinic’, in regards to his singing skills, “ I think I’m not bad” and “If I were to practice, I could probably make it into TOP7 of ‘Superstar K’. Yoon Sang Hyun even has know-how on how to ‘act out singing’ because he has often had roles in which his characters are related to song.
“I think singing and acting out singing is the same. When singing, it’s necessary to put enough emotions into the song for four to five minutes. Even if you’re acting out singing, it’s necessary to focus on expressing the emotions of the song at that moment. I think that’s how emotions can be properly delivered.”
Recently, in a different interview, Yoon Sang Hyun mentioned that the reason he chose to participate in ‘Voice Clinic’ was because ‘all his of work in which he sang were successful, but he wanted to stop singing in order to pursue a different image.’ He also raised anticipation by saying that this is ‘a new attempt that will surprise everyone.’
Yoon Sang Hyun meaningfully spent the past year constantly trying out and experiencing new things. He revealed his plans to take another leap in 2013, “Next year, I will work hard, as if I was still a rookie.”
“I think it’s important to hold onto my rookie mindset. This year was really enjoyable and happy because I filmed a movie, traveled on vacation, and even held a concert in Japan. I was able to spend 2012 with joy because for all the interest and love everyone has given me and I will really work hard to act as though I was still a rookie. Please watch out for me.”
